Why Would a Pet Need a Cytologic Examination?
- Cytology is indicated for almost every patient experiencing itchy skin, scaly skin, odoriferous skin, or hair loss.
What is a Cytologic Examination?
- Cytology is defined as the study of cells, their origin, structure, function and pathology. Skin scrapings, aspirations, impressions, ear swabs and tape preparations are different techniques used to obtain cytologic samples.
- A superficial skin scraping is used to reveal different species of canine and feline mites. Each mite species require different treatment protocols. Accurate diagnosis is critical in determining the appropriate medications to safely treat a patient.

- Impression smears and tape preparations of the skin and ear are obtained using a cotton swab or clear tape and rolled onto a glass slide. The slides are stained and then placed for microscopic examination. Malassezia yeast, Staph and other bacteria can be seen in these preparations. This will be helpful in determining the appropriate medication for a patient.
